Matte Lip Creams & Matte Glosses: a collection

Redbone by Childish Gabino
Today's post is focusing on all the matte lip creams in my collection. To clarify what I deem to be a "matte lip cream" is a mousse-like creamy liquid lipstick that is not very watery, takes a great while to dry down and is typically more comfortable to wear than a run of the mill liquid to matte liquid lipstick. Additionally, matte lip creams in my opinion have a soft finish even if they are appear to be a "bold" colour. In relation to the other lip products I have, my "matte lip cream" collection is pretty small  but, I had always noticed eerie similarities.

Are we being duped?

I've found that products from different brands felt and smelt the same and with further investigation - they even have the same initial ingredients! So, it may be safe to surmise that a company out there may have a patent on the formula and is selling it to some companies that will put their name on it. Nothing wrong with that - but, its good to know for consumers because you can save a few pounds here or there.

Lastly, I'll also talk about "matte glosses" that are kinda in the lip cream category but, are much more pigmented and never really dry down at all. The formula is often very smooth and more similar to a liquidised lipstick but, extremely comfortable (i.e. not drying) and never dries down to a immovable flat matte finish (aka possibly a satin liquid lipstick - not quite glossy but not matte either).

Highstreet/Drugstore clones

NYX Soft Matte Lip Creams in: Rome, Addis Ababa & Copenhagen.
If you haven't heard of these - then you may have spent the last few years living life off the makeup web ... lucky you. I think it would be fair to say that this product is a cult favourite and really herald the shift from shiny dewy/greasy lips to powdery/crusty ones. What's great about this product is its creamy application, the comfy feel, very light scent and price (reasonable). Plus, NYX has a plethora of shades to choose from and can be found in most countries (I think). I have 3 shades Addis Abba, Rome (gifted to me by a friend - thank you!) and Copenhagen.
Thoughts: Since the hype was so big when I tried them initially I was a bit disappointed as the formula reminded me of a much cheaper product, the shade was not as pigmented as I had hoped and it took a really long time to dry. Yet, with time I have grown to like and appreciate them. Apparently, the shade London is a dupe for KJ Exposed liquid lipstick - (which I lowkey love) but, I'm just not too pressed to get anymore of this formula.
Price: £6 each for 8mls
Great For: Those who want matte comfortable lips without fuss and would like wide colour options from a L'Oreal own brand (yes I was surprised too).
Ingredients: Isohexadecane, Pentaerythrityl Tetraisostearate, Disteardimonium Hectorite, Dimethicone, Beeswax/Cera Alba/Cire d’Abeille, Glyceryl Behenate/Eicosadioate, Talc, Cyclopentasiloxane, Propylene Carbonate, Silica, Methyl Methacrylate Crosspolymer, Aluminum Starch Octenylsuccinate, Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Rosin/Colophonium/Colophane, Barium Sulfate (CI 77120), Phenoxyethanol, Flavor/Aroma, Benzyl Alcohol, Benzyl Benzoate, Benzyl Salicylate, Hexyl Cinnamal, Hydroxycitronellal. MAY CONTAIN / PEUT CONTENIR (+/-): Mica, Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Iron Oxides (CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499), Manganese Violet (CI 77742), Yellow 6 Lake (CI 15985), Yellow 5 Lake (CI 19140), Red 6 (CI 15850), Red 7 (CI 15850), Red 28 Lake (CI 45410).

Collection 2000/Collection - Cream Puff Lip Cream in Powder Puff & Cotton Candy
Since, I live in the UK more often than not - the worlds cult favs are unlikely to be found at me local beauty counter/store (props to Fenty being at Harevy Nichols though). Hence, why I did my research and came across Collection's answer at the time to this UK's lip lover aching need. This product is essentially NYX matte lip cream formula in a different bottle. Collection no longer sells cream puffs (which only came in the two colours I have) but, they do have their matte pouts which I'm sure is the exact same thing but, with new colours.
Thoughts: The colour range was what stopped me from actively using them often since there on the paler spectrum but, they do work OK on my skin tone. Powder Puff (the beige one) gives me KJ exposed vibes when on the lips but is  certainly not as pigmengted.
Price: £2.99 for 5mls
Great For: Those who don't want to spend more on NYX lip creams especially if there is a similar shade in the  Collection range.
Ingredients: Isohexadecane, Pentaerythrityl, Tetraisostearate, Dimethicone, Disteardimonium, Disteardimonium  Hectorite, PEG-8 Beeswax, Glyceryl, Behenate/Eicosadioate, Propylene Carbonate, Methyl Methacrylate Crosspolymer, Silica, Dimethicone, Crosspolymer, Tocopheryl Acetate, Panthenol, Aroma, Talc, Aluminium Starch, Octenylsuccinate, Phenoxyethanol, Hexyl Cinnamal, Benzyl Benzoate, Hydroxycitronellal, Benzyl Saliciyakte, Benzyl Alcohol [+'/- CI 77891, CI 15850, CI 15985, CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499, Mica].

Makeup Gallery Pout Matters Lip Colour in Latte, Vintage Pink, Purple Pop & Cherry Pop
A poundland makeup brand.Yes poundland does makeup and yes its actually quite good - well the things I have tried have been.
Thoughts: Same initial formula/ingredients as the previous brands but only costs £1 - do I need to say anything more.
Price: £1 for 5mls
Great for: The frugal, those who want to test out if they'd like NYX lip creams formula and try similar shades that Poundland offers. Plus, I think Latte looks very similar to Cashmere see link: *Miss Beauty Saver* (props for her reviews as it actually made me try these! :).

W7 Mega Matte Lips in Oddball & Hasta La Vista
A British brand that makes trending products and popular dupes.
Thoughts: Same/similar formula as the others, depending on where you buy it, the price can range from around £2 to £5. For some reason in my head W7 was a bit of a tacky brand but, after trying a few of their lipsticks I realised the error of my toxic judgement and I actually really like the brand now.
Price: £1.95 or £4.95 for 7mls
Great For: Those who want more product than 5mls but at a lesser cost than NYX's £6 for 8mls. I really like these - Yes it has the same formula of the others but, with better names (imo).
Ingredients: Isohexadecane, Pentaerythrityl Tetraisostearate, Disteardimonium Hectorite, Dimethicone, Cyclopentasiloxane/Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Cera Alba, Glyceryl Behenate/Eiosadidate, Propylene Carbonate, Methyl Methacrylate, Crosspolymer, Silica, Talc, Aluminium, Starch Octenylsuccinate, Phenoxyethanol, Parfum, Hydrogenated Coconut Oil, Retinyl Palmitate/ Tocopherol, Benzyl Salicylate, Benzyl Benzoate, Benzyl Alcohol, Hydroxycitronellal, Hexyl Cinnamal, May Contain:
Expiration: 12 months.

What's the best?!

Well, since their all essentially the same formula it really depends on what your looking for and budget. If you want to go for more brighter colours like oranges etc - NYX is the only brand that has such a wide range but, if your into more pinks/nudes and reds all brands mentioned cater to that. Personally I have shades I like from all brands and shades I'm not so fond so, I think it really depends all on the colour but, I will say that "Oddball" by W7 is possibly my favourite shade in all the range (it looks awesome paired with Jordana's Carbernet lip liner ;).

Shaking Things Up

Makeup Revolution Ultra Velour Lip Cream in "Not one for playing games"
Not only do I love the name (can I get a Amen!) but, I also like the colour. This lip cream does not have the same formula scent/feel as the others I have mentioned and is definitely smoother and more oil based. It looks like this is discontinued now which is a shame but, I thought I'd include it anyway as it is "unique" (Beauty Bar's Matte lip cream had the same concept - but it's also discontinued) to the matte lip cream family. Perhaps there is one knocking about some shelf somewhere that you may get to try (?). It smells like sweet caramel candy has a creamy/oily texture, decent pigmentation and it was inexpensive. Nonetheless - I can understand why this "matte lip cream" type is not popular since its not what's currently trending (super matte lips), it has an oily texture/feel, its not full pigmented and never will dry down. I still like it though.

Matte Lip Glosses

Giorgio Armani Lip Maestro  in 400
A smooth very pigmented formula that gives a matte like finish but, a creamy weightless feel on the lips. This lip product will not dry down to a powder matte finish especially if you apply it with the wand as often with a "matte gloss" the more you apply the more satin the finish will be. To mattify matte lip glosses blot with a tissue. A great video to watch is Judy Le Kitty her swatches are really beautiful and helpful.
Thoughts: I really love it. It is very pricey but, a little goes a long way and if you're only after one product to wear and use up in a really comfy mousse-cream formula this is a better option than buying ton of inexpensive lipsticks that you might not like or wear.
Price: £28 for 6.5 ml.
Great For: People who want matte-like lips without an overtly dry feel or look and are not after a kiss proof powder matte product from a brand also owned by L'Oreal ... (why do they own everything?! *cries*).
Ingredients: Dimethicone, Bis-diglyceryl Polyacyladipate-2, Diisostearyl Malate, Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Hydrogenated Polyisobutene, Phenyl Trimethicone, Kaolin, Hdi/trimethylol Hexyllactone Crosspolymer, Isostearyl Isostearate, Polyethylene, Vinyl Dimethicone/methicone Silsesquioxane Crosspolymer, Nylon-12, Pentylene Glycol, Hydrated Silica, Magnesium Silicate, Ethylhexylglycerin, Silica, Calcium Aluminum Borosilicate, Calcium Sodium Borosilicate, Synthetic Fluorphlogopite, Pentaerythrityl Tetra-di-t-butyl Hydroxyhydrocinnamate, Tin Oxide, Caprylyl Glycol, Methicone, Alumina, [+/- May Contain: Ci 15850/red 7, Ci 7789/titanium Dioxide, Ci 77491, Ci 77492, Ci 77499/iron Oxides, Ci 45410/red 28 Lake, Ci 15985/yellow 6 Lake, Ci 45380/red 22 Lake, Ci 19140/yellow 5 Lake, Ci 42090/blue 1 Lake, Ci 15850/red 7 Lake, Ci 15850/red 6, Ci 75470/carmine, Mica]

City Colour Creamy Lips in Pink Cosmo & Cherry Daiquiri
A more oily matte lip gloss which depending on the shade may need you to buff the product into the lips with your finger to have a smooth finish.
Thoughts: Has a very moisturising feel, a sweet fruity scent and great pigmentation. I really love how easy they are to apply, the feel, look and price!
Price: £1.92/$2.49
Great For: Those who don't mind oilier based lip products, mild scents and a slight glossy appearance when not blotted.

L'oreal Matte Gloss in Forgive My Sin 402 (not sure I can L'Oreal)
The glossiest of all the matte lip glosses I own. From what I can see online I think L'oreal has discontinued this shade and possibly repackaged it in their new "matte infalliable lip paint" with a new name and yes I tried one just to test and see - they are similar. This product is very creamy, extremely pigmented and very comfortable on the lips as it really feels like a sumptuous balm/lip treatment. Personally, I've never really been fond of L'Oreal as a brand (their ad campaigns, whiff of racism lawsuits etc.) has always irked me but, I can't deny the greatness of this product.
Price: £7.99 when it retailed.
Great For: Those who don't mind glossier matte lips and buying directly from L'Oreal (they own a whole lot of everything). Plus for what its worth, the formula contains hyaluronic acid to hydrate the lips (second to last ingredient from the bottom)
Ingredients: Dimethicone, Bis-Diglyceryl Polyacyladipate-2, Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Diisostearyl Malate, Hydrogenated Polyisobutene, Phenyl Trimethicone, Kaolin, HDI/Trimethylol Hexyllactone Crosspolymer, Isostearyl Isostearate, Polyethylene, Vinyl Dimethicone/Methicone Silsesquioxane Crosspolymer, Nylon-12, Pentylene Glycol, Alumina, Caprylyl Glycol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Calcium Sodium Borosilicate, Synthetic Fluorphlogopite, Tocopheryl Acetate, Silica, Calcium Aluminum Borosilicate, Benzyl Alcohol, Pentaerythrityl Tetra-Di-T-Butyl Hydroxyhydrocinnamate, Magnesium Silicate, Silica Dimethyl Silylate [NANO]/Silica Dimethyl Silylate, Geraniol, Tin Oxide, Hexyl Cinnamal, Hydroxycitronellal, Sodium Hyaluronate, Fragrance.

L'Oreal Matte Lip Paint in Apocalypse Red 205
Deeper and less glossy in person than on camera. The formula is very similar to the other L'Oreal matte gloss but, less glossy. Its a nice product and can be made more matte by blotting with a tissue to create a berry flush stained lip.
Price: £7.99
Great For: Those who can stomach the L'Oreal brand and like softer creamy matt lip products that don't really dry down unless blotted or sparingly applied.
Ingredients: Dimethicone, Bis-Diglyceryl Polyacyladipate-2, Diisostearyl Malate, Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Hydrogenated Poly-Isobutene, Phenyl Trimethicone, Kaolin, HDI/Trimethylol Hexyllactone Cross-Polymer, Isostearyl Isostearate, Poly-Ethylene, Vinyl Dimethicone/ Methicone Silsesquioxane Crosspolymer, Nylon-12, Pentylene Glycol, Alumina, Caprylyl Glycol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Silica, Synthetic Fluorphlogopite, Penta-Erythrityl Tetra-Di-T-Butyl Hydroxy-Hydrocinnamate, Calcium Sodium Borosilicate, Alpha-Isomethyl Ionone, Calcium Aluminum Borosilicate, Magnesium Silicate, Aluminum Hydroxide, Tin Oxide, Tocopherol, Parfum/Fragrance, [+/- May contain: Mica, CI 45410 / Red 28 Lake, CI 77891 / Titanium Dioxide, CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499 / Iron Oxides, CI 45380 / Red 22 Lake, CI 15850 / Red 7, CI 15985 / Yellow 6 Lake, CI 19140 / Yellow 5 Lake, CI 42090 / Blue 1 Lake, CI 75470 / Carmine], (F.I.L. Maybelline Vivid Matte Liquid in 15 Electric Pink & 35 Rebel Red
Similar to the older L'Oreal matte gloss in its glossiness and City Color's "matte" glosses but more matte than City Color. I've been really loving the new glosses Maybelline have come out with (Color Exlixir's) and these are no exceptions. I think a lot of people were mislead to think these were a liquid to matte - there not, they will never dry down - but they can be blotted matte. Their so soft, smooth, lightweight and pigmented.
Great for: Those who don't mind buying from L'Oreal indirectly - yes L'Oreal owns Maybelline *cries*. Well, it shouldn't be that surprising since both companies test on animals *cries again*.
Price: £7.99
Ingredients: Dimethicone, Bis-Diglyceryl Polyacyladipate-2, Diisostearyl Malate, Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Hydrogenated Polyisobutene, Phenyl Trimethicone, Kaolin, HDI / Trimethylol Hexyllactone Crosspolymer, Isostearyl Isostearate, Polyethylene, Vinyl Dimethicone / Methicone Silsesquioxane Crosspolymer, Nylon-12, Pentylene Glycol, Caprylyl Glycol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Alumina, Silica, Pentaerythrityl Tetra-Di-T-Butyl Hydroxyhydrocinnamate, Linalool, Aluminum Hydroxide, Synthetic Fluorphlogopite, Calcium Sodium Borosilicate, Calcium Aluminum Borosilicate, Limonene, Tocopherol, Tin Oxide, BHT, Parfum / Fragrance. May Contain: Mica, CI 45410 / Red 28 Lake, CI 77891 / Titanium Dioxide, CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499 / Iron Oxides, CI 45380 / Red 22 Lake, CI 15850 / Red 7, CI 15985 / Yellow 6 Lake, CI 42090 / Blue 1 Lake, CI 19140 / Yellow 5 Lake, CI 75470 / Carmine.

Honourable Mentions: Bourjois, Peripera and Beauty Bar Baby - since I've already reviewed Bourjois I'll just link it here and I'll do a single review for the Peripera ink/airy velvet's and Beauty Bar Baby because I'd want to do a more in depth overview.

Ultimately its not surprising that many products from "different" brands who share the same Parent company are very similar if not the same. Its actually quite laughable that I didn't match up the links but, now I have taken the red pill. Its actually quite disappointing and kinda creepy that in a store filled with a gazillion products where you'd think we'd have choice and diversity - we may just be buying  from actually one or two main brands with their same old "snake oil" formula. Talk about being in a matrix/ placebo effect. Of course, there maybe many reasons for this perhaps many formulations are unsafe, need too much testing and like the age old adage says "if it ain't broke - why fix it?". Yet, I can't help laughing at myself and feeling a tad peeved at owning so much L'Oreal items when I've never been a L'Oreal fan ... Pushing L'Oreal's apparent skewed ethics aside (since they are a business/money making heartless machine) their slogans always irked me. Mini rant spiel over and done. I just thought I'd share my new (useless possibly uncalled for) knowledge.

Have you tried any matte lip creams?
Any favourite shades?
How do you feel about Parent companies and their brands?
Does it affect you buying from a brand or not?
